How Did Neighboring Countries Help? Countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Bangladesh all refuse to help any of the refugees stranded at sea. They claim to not have enough facilities or money to deal with the helpless Rohingya people. "Buddhist Thailand has 'no stomach' for more Muslims" (hrw.org). This statement shows that most of those southern Asian countries are using money and resources as an excuse not to take in the Muslims.
How has the World Responded? The Rohingya people are offered almost no help from other countries. It seems as though the problem of hundreds of Muslims stranded at sea is swept under the rug for most western countries. Even the U.S. has done little to help the Muslims in Burma. "This is a regional issue. It needs a regional solution in short order."(U.S.Department Spokesman Jeff Rathke). The U.S./EU both say that the only way that this problem is can be solved is if the surrounding countries help the refugees. Unfortunately the Southern Asian countries wont be helping anytime soon and the Burmese government still refuses to admit that they have anything to do with the ethnic cleansing.
However, there are many different small organizations that do try to help the Muslims in Burma. Organizations like the Arakan Rohingya National Orgainization (ARNO) or the Rohingya Solidarity Organization (RSO) all make efforts to help the Rohingya people. There are many, many other organizations around the world trying to make an effort to help the Muslims. Although these orgainizations do help with their funds and donations, no real change will occur unless whole countries begin taking in the Rohingya as refugees and end the ethnic cleansing.
